"Magic Mirror on the wall, who is the fairest one of all?"
- The evil queen, Disney's Snow White, 1937
Disney's version of Snow White may be the most universally known, but the story itself is much older. The German fairy tale was first published by the Brothers Grimm in 1812. Some experts believe it was based on the real life story of Margaretha von Waldeck, a German countess born in 1533. She was forced by her stepmother to move away, fell in love with the prince of Spain, and was poisoned by those who opposed the relationship. Another theory is that Snow White is based on a baroness born in 1725.
Another inspiration may have been the Roman legend of Chione, recorded by the poet Ovid. "Chione" means "snow" in Greek. In the legend, two gods fell in love with Chione. She was approached by one dressed as an old person, put to sleep by another, and killed by a goddess after boasting that she was more beautiful than she.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing Snow White
1. Begin by sketching Snow White's face. Use curved lines to outline the cheek, jaw, neck, forehead, and hair.
2. Draw a bow where the hair meets at a point at the top of the forehead. Draw a rounded shape for the knot, and irregular rounded shapes on each side. Detail the folds of the fabric by drawing short lines extending from the knot. Then, extend two curved lines from one side of the bow and allow them to meet at a sharp point, indicating the ribbon around the head.
3. Enclose Snow White's hair. On each side of the bow, extend a series of overlapping curved lines to meet the side of the face or neck.
4. Draw the upturned collar of Snow White's dress. Use a curved line to enclose the neck of the garment, and extend it beyond the face. Then, enclose the collar itself using curved lines.
5. Draw Snow White's puffy sleeve. Use overlapping curved lines to enclose an incomplete rounded shape. Draw short, straight lines across each side of the opening, and connect them at each end using curved lines.
6. Extend a pair of curved lines from the sleeve to outline Snow White's arm.
7. Draw the bodice of the dress. Use curved lines to complete the collar and form the sides of the torso. Then, draw a seam by placing a curved line in the center of the torso. Extend curved lines outward and down from the bottom of the torso, indicating the skirt of the dress. Detail the sleeve by drawing teardrop shapes within it.
8. Use curved lines to enclose the remaining puff sleeve and its teardrop decoration. Draw a small, narrow rectangle beneath it to complete the sleeve. Then, extend a pair of curved lines from the sleeve to enclose the arm.
9. Detail Snow White's face. Use curved lines to draw the eyebrows, nose, and mouth. The eyes should be rounded but have a gentle point on one side. Draw several consecutively smaller circles within each eye. Shade between the two smallest to indicate the pupil, and use thick curved lines to draw the eyebrows.
Color Snow White. Her dress typically has a blue bodice with red embellishments and a yellow skirt.
